Short Film: 'Mama' with intro from Guillermo del Toro

The feature film, 'Mama', coming to theatres on January 18, 2013, was based on a short film of the same name from Andy and Barbara Muschietti.

This exclusive look at the original short film is presented by Guillermo del Toro and includes one of the scariest scenes del Toro has ever seen. The craftsmanship, ingenuity, and horror presented by the Muschiettis made him want to be a Producer for the feature film.

Short Animation: 'A Pale Blue Dot' by Joel Somerfield

An animated visualization of Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot monologue, where he muses on our planet’s appearance in a photograph taken by the Voyager 1 space probe – the most distant photograph ever taken of Earth, created by Joel Somerfield of digital production house, Order.

Book Review: 'The Art Of Rise Of The Guardians'

I loved the film when I saw it at the cinema (well worth your time too), and when I saw some of the concept art from Shane Prigmore online, I decided to splurge on the art book too.

The hardcover book is a guided tour to the behind the scenes development of the film and is filled cover to cover with lots of art, including storyboards, character design, visual development art and effects concepts.

The book is introduced with a forward by Alec Baldwin, voice of North in the film, and a preface from William Joyce, the creator of the books the film is based on and then is split into seven parts. Each chapter looks at each of the Guardians and their realms, from North, the Guardian of Wonder, and the North Pole, the Guardian Of Hope (Bunny), the Guardian Of Memories (Tooth Fairy) and the Guardian Of Dreams (Sandy), plus the worlds of Pitch the Nightmare King and Jack, the Earthbound Guardian Of Fun.

In a foldout gatefold page, there's also a short chapter that goes behind the scenes of one of the scenes in the film 'The Making Of Sequence 1300: The Tooth Palace', where the Guardians discover that Pitch and his army of Nightmares are stealing all the tooth memories. It's a flow chart with contributions from those that worked on the sequence; from the first stages of the story and art, through to modeling, layout, animation effects, lighting and more until the final idea that we see onscreen.

The 150+ colourful glossy pages of this movie art book are packed with glorious illustrations, sketches and more, making it yet another quality hardcover movie art book for my growing collection, and hopefully it will be part of yours too!

Movie Review: 'The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey'

And so we're back in Middle Earth again and it's a joy to be back!

'An Unexpected Journey' begins just before Bilbo Baggins' party at the start of 'The Fellowship Of The Ring' as we see Ian Holm and Elijah Wood reprise their roles again, I like the way it all dovetailed nicely into The Lord Of The Rings films, and when Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins appears, it's 60 years before the events of The Lord Of The Rings and the beginning of Bilbo's adventure to help the dwarves take back The Lonely Mountain from Smaug.

As with other recent films that were adapted from books (John Carter from Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess Of Mars and Total Recall from Philip K Dick's We Can Remember It For You Wholesale for example), I had to read the book first. Yes, I never expect to see a movie that fully adapts a book to film too faithfully, as some scenes work better on the page and in your imagination than up on the silver screen, but the main parts of The Hobbit's first six chapters are there; the introduction of the dwarves, the three trolls, the stone giants, the goblins, finding the ring, the riddles in the dark with Bilbo and Gollum, the attack of the Wargs and the appearance of the eagles.

Director Peter Jackson has also mined the appendices at the back of The Return Of The King book and we see expanded sequences like the early history of Erebor, a glimpse of Smaug, Radagast The Brown's discovery of the Necromancer, the Battle Of Azanulbizar between the dwarves and orcs and the White Council in Rivendell. These scenes certainly pad the movie out to fill out the 169 minutes, but they also serve to fill in some of the back story and further links The Hobbit to the events that will happen in The Lord Of The Rings. Some might question the reason for stretching out a story that comprises of just 19 chapters into three films, but with adding what's in the appendices, you will get a better, overall feel of the history and goings on in Middle Earth, enriching the whole experience of watching these movies and to me that's no bad thing. I envision a massive Hobbit / Lord Of The Rings movie marathon once the boxset come out!

Visually, Weta have hit the mark again, creating a believable world inhabited by hobbits, dwarves, elves, goblins, orcs and more. My only criticism is of the wolf like Wargs, they did seem a bit cartoonish looking compared to everything else, but they don't detract from the action sequences.

Howard Shore is back on scoring duties too, with some familiar musical themes that hark back to The Lord Of The Rings as well. All good!

Overall, 'The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey' is very much worth your while, especially if you are a fan of The Lord Of The Rings films and original book. Yes, it does take a while to get going (as first films in a trilogy tend to do), but once it does, you'll be swept along for a rather enjoyable ride. The downside, we've got to wait a whole year for the second installment; 'The Desolation Of Smaug'. I can't wait!

The Hobbit - Official Production Video #10

Seeing as 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' is out now in cinemas, my review coming up soon, here's the tenth and probably last video production diary for 'An Unexpected Journey'.

Friday, December 14, 2012

Book Review: 'The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey: Chronicles - Art & Design'

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Chronicles - Art & Design' is a gorgeous hardcover book that is packed cover to cover with over a thousand images of concept art, photographs, sketches and paintings from the artists working behind the scenes to help bring Peter Jackson's vision of 'The Hobbit' onto the screen.

The book is compiled by Weta senior concept designer Daniel Falconer with a foreward by Production Designer Dan Hannah and an introduction from Richard Taylor, Weta's Design & Special Effects Supervisor. Each chapter of the book details a particular section of the film; starting with Bilbo Baggins, Bag End, Hobbiton and the rest of the Hobbits, through to a very detailed look at each of the Dwarves (even a quick look at Moria and the Battle Of Azanulbizar), the wizards, the trolls, the elves, Gollum, the landscapes and the other creatures from Middle-Earth that feature in the film. Each chapter is looked at in depth with prelim sketches, beautiful concept art and photographs.

There are two special fold-out features to this book; a large replica of Thorin's map, printed in glow-in-the-dark ink and a three page fold-out replica of Bilbo's burglar contract.

You can see as to how much detail has been put into this book, with the Weta team working very closely with the production team to make sure that the book is packed to the gills. Apparently this is only the first of a series of lavish hardcover books from Weta. If that's the case, and after reading this volume, I can't wait to see what the other books in the series will be like.

Rian Johnson's Screenplay For 'Looper' Now Available For Free

by Glen Matthews
(aka Midnight Marauder)
I enjoyed this film when I saw in cinemas earlier in the year (already got the bluray on order for January), and now you can read the final draft of Rian Johnson's script for 'Looper'.

This is not a “shooting script” conformed to the final picture, it’s actually the final draft of the script we went into production with, and differs from the final film in many respects, which are hopefully more interesting than annoying.
A brief introduction is attached to the script.  Enjoy, share and disperse freely.

New Japanese Poster For 'OZ: The Great And Powerful'

Performed in the spirit of the classic Star Wars NPR radio dramas and set in the original trilogy era, Smuggler’s Gambit tests Han and Chewie’s commitment to the cause as they venture off to reclaim their glory days, only to realize that their decision to help the Rebellion take down the Death Star was not without consequence…

Star Wars: Smuggler’s Gambit was recorded live at Celebration VI in Orlando, Florida, based on an original script by Kyle Newman and F.J. DeSanto. The audio extravaganza was directed by Newman and produced by Jimmy “Mac” McInerney of ForceCast.net, who whipped up over 100 sound effects and music cues, which were blasted live onstage alongside the actors to a packed audience of almost 2,000 diehard Star Wars fans!

Movie Review: 'Rise Of The Guardians'

Based upon William Joyce's 'The Guardians Of Childhood' books, Rise of the Guardians tells the story of a group of heroes - each with extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit, known as Pitch, lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

I really enjoyed this. From the first trailers, I had been looking forward to it. I wasn't disappointed either.

It is your typical heroes join up and save the world plot, think Avengers (and nearly every superhero film for that matter), but I'd say aimed at a younger crowd. Yes it may come across a little cheesy and lightweight at times, but it's still fun and very enjoyable. I (and the rest of the audience) laughed out loud at some parts, mostly some of the reoccurring jokes in the film and the reactions from the yetis and elves.

The animation is first rate, as most animated fare is these days. The battle between The Sandman and Pitch as well as the waves of Night Mares in the battle towards the end, are the highlights and simply amazing and superbly done! I watched this in dazzling 2D, so I'm sure the look of these in 3D would be absolutely awesome.

You can see after watching 'Guardians', that the fingerprints of Guillermo Del Toro are on this film too. Acting as Executive Producer, you can see his influence on some of the sequences, definitely on the Night Mares and some of the darkness of the tone of the film. Generally I don't mind movies that are aimed at an all ages audience, and I'd say you would have to balance the lightness with the darkness to get an all rounded feel. 'Rise Of The Guardians' manages to do this and joins the likes of 'ParaNorman' and 'Brave' that I've seen this year, as top notch animated films for all the family.

All in all, if you want an action, adventure film for all the family then you can do no wrong in settling down to watch this. Definitely recommended.
